So as I sit at my desk reminiscing there's always one place that I must stay true to and remember. When I created this account, back in the days when I used to go by my actual name -NickCreevy..I'm talking way way back when I used to be a regular banned user (I'm sure you can remember these times Moonbeam13 ) this community was a excuse to download beautiful wallpapers by javierocasio & celsojunior and try to mimic a Mac OS X menu bar on my old school hi-grade Windows XP that my Mum brought off QVC (I really did believe it was the shit). But then this place turned into a daily home for myself, it sparked some creativity inside of me I never believed I could ever come across. This is going back to the days when I met PascalPixel and he taught me how to create glowing circles in Photoshop (just so I could steal that celsojunior signature style) over MSN messenger, back when I was on the other side of the globe. We used to have incredible debates in those days to the point we became enemies and was constantly trying to do better than one another.

Always gathering a crew of people (Remember these times archanN?) over one another or trying to use proxy servers to bump up our website reboot entries for May1Reboot, and who had the most DDs, views or downloads on a deviation. It was really childish thinking back now, but at the time I was a terrible person that just wanted to do better in a weird way. This is going back a really long time and as I sit at the comfy age of 27 now, I have to thank PascalPixel for those times, because if it wasn't for you buddy I would of never discovered photography and being able to live a happy life today. Not to mention Moonbeam13 for forever unblocking my account and allowing me a gallery moderator status (yes that was the name for it). I must not forget the England crew of people I discovered at dev meetups (you know the drill neilmjones) of getting incredibly drunk in baker street and wandering around fenchurch street taking pictures whilst snapping our necks.

Times like these really makes me reflect on life in general, how much the little things make such a big impact on your life and self in future years to come. I don't think I have enough words to say how deeply thankful I am for this community existing..

Ever wondered how that deviant you admire got to where they are and jumped the walls your still looking at? Get to know has been created to get that need-to-know information out of that inspiring deviant you've always admired. From the first steps, to challenges they have overcome, what the future holds and friendly advice along the way.

Today I shall be interviewing the amazingly talented AaronMcPolin

New ID by AaronMcPolin

Can you tell us about yourself and how you ended up in the fashion industry?

I'm 22, originally from a small industrial town called Atherton near Wigan In England. I've always had an interest in art and nature but I never really fully understood it until a later age. Originally I was obsessed with charcoal and pencil real life drawings and later ink work, this has really flown into my tedious attention for detail, but what really struck me when I got into high school was abstract art, the intricacy of colour and form just alluded and captivated me. I went to university wanting to be a graphic designer, realising that this was really my only opportunity to figure out my lust for making things. But after having issues with my citizenship I had to drop out, this gave me a year of nothing to do, I decided I'd take the camera out that I had to use for the course and really started experimenting with landscapes and light whilst walking my dogs. I became obsessed, just capturing the fleeting moments, playing with the techniques and seeing things I've never seen before. Strafing lights and saturated colours, it was a whole other world.

I then started back at university and put the camera down for a while, I was unsure of what I wanted to be, either a graphic designer or a photographer, even the idea of doing an advertising major struck me. The real major turning point was when I went back to the UK for a holiday. I met one of my most influential photographers of the time and her family, meeting her really opened my eyes, knowing that goals are achievable just struck me. I came back and really started to knuckle down, I started a night course of makeup design, so that I could meet makeup artists, and started to shoot 2-3 times a week whilst doing my university studies on top of that and working as a picture framer on the weekends. University became mundane and boring, I challenged and tweaked every brief so that It allowed me to submit my fashion and beauty imagery. I recently graduated at the end of 2010 and won the photography award at university.
I think what really got me into photography was the intricacy and immediacy it had and the ability to create lavish fantasies into reality. There's a sort of sense of play that you don't get with any other medium, the way of interacting with people and seeing the image roll into place in front of you, capturing that perfect moment where everything is how you picture, or sometimes capturing something that you just thought was not possible.

What was one of the biggest challenges you had to overcome when starting out?

Meeting the right people; it's always challenging to get the right people on board, and to find out who is available to you, or at least who would like to work with you. It's really about getting yourself out there and doing a lot of free work to get to know them. Photography isn't just a sole act, it involves the team, your subject and your surroundings, it's important that everyone has the same goal and mind set.
What would you like to see more of in the fashion world, and why?
Set design, I need to start this myself, I love lavish large scenes. Where people have gone out of their way and comfort zone to make something that is only seen in fatasies.

Gaia by AaronMcPolin Gaia II by AaronMcPolin Bloom by AaronMcPolin

Would you believe where you are now is the final accomplishment or are your eyes set on a bigger goals?

I am nowhere near where I want to be, I have only just recently graduated and I have a massive book I've been sketching in for years of ideas that I've been itching to start working on. I want to be in New York, Paris, Tokyo and London. I want to play with different creative's, settings and cross collaborate. I think the environment you work in really effects your mind set and the ideas that you come out with, even the natural lighting varies in different countries, the soft overcast of England has a completely different feel to the stark harsh light of Australia's outback. It's exciting really, knowing that photography has been around for so many years but yet so many ideas are unexplored.

Do you find social networking a big plus in the industry, if so why?

For me it's just a new way to meet and greet new faces, find new talent and for self promotion. It really is a great way to get involved with the fashion scene and the people that are involved in it.

What is your favourite photograph you've shot and the story behind it? (inspirations, desires etc)

This is a hard one, I like different photographs for different reasons although my favourite would be matriarch, fav.me/d3anyye It was my final university project. I really got to see this series come to life, I nurtured the idea and had been waiting to make it come to life for over a year before finally having the opportunity and the right people to make it happen. The full series was titled seduction, it was a play of bringing the emotions of tabbo, domination and acquiescence into not just ideas but visual examples of female seduction, domination being the matriarch, a girl so fierce, powerful and enticing she entices her victim by domination and allusive seduction.

Paper Planes by AaronMcPolin Torn by AaronMcPolin

Who/What inspires you?

I get inspired just as much from the autumn blooms as I do from the fashion magazines I horde and treasure. I'm in awe with Nick Knights concepts of art and fashion, Tim Walkers serenity, set design and fantasy worlds not to mention the dream like worlds of Bruno Dayan or the extremely beautiful experimentations of Rankin. I'm even inspired by Terry Richardson's lively and erotic playfulness with his subjects. All of the above I can see myself experimenting and combining into my work, my style at the moment is just a beginning of constant play.

For people starting out in the fashion industry, what would be the best advice you could give to them?

Practice and learn from your failures, if you learn from your failures you never failed at all.

On average, how does your normal day go prior to setting up a shoot?

I think for days before hand, I scout, I think about the feel and the mood. I talk with the designer about their work, have them express their ideas. I listen to my team and let them have their input as much as I do my own.
I make a new music CD for each photoshoot, and layout my sketches and really get to know the people I'm working with and talk through the movements and feel that the shoot is about and what I want from them.

The Crane by AaronMcPolin Like Eating Glass by AaronMcPolin Forget me not by AaronMcPolin

Did you find when starting up in the industry you had to earn a lot of trust from all creatives? (makeup artists, stylists, clients)

Not only trust but finding creative's that work well with your ideas, who help to push you forward.

Do you have a favourite shoot atmosphere, as in being in a studio or on location with your personal work?

I have of late been doing a lot of studio commercial work, It's fun as you can really control your environment, although my true love is being on location, where things are unpredictable, challenging and very very fun. I love the fleeting light at sunset, having to be on my toes and really improvise ideas. I think the studio is good for art and close personal interaction with the subject, but location gives more essence of play, more emotion and feeling and of course a better story.

Be sure to check out AaronMcPolin's gallery for a complete collection of all his photography. If you have any future recommendations of people you'd like to be interviewed or any questions you would of liked to ask, please send me a note titled 'Get to know interviews'.

STARTING UP

Anyone would agree when starting a career/switching can be very exciting and frustrating at the same time when your not sure where to start. When starting up as a fashion photographer the main obvious thing is building your portfolio up full of all the beauty you have captured, Truth be told this NEVER stops. You will always continuly be adjusting your portfolio all the time with new ideas you want to share with the world to help keep your work fresh and viberant where you're sharing it.

This is when you will come across the word 'Testing' quite allot via several makeup artists, hair/wardrobe stylists, models and designers. Unless your heavily skilled with a camera and hair/hair tools (there are some people out there!) you will need these type of people along side you when shooting, from personal experience the more people the easier the process. Great websites to find people that are currently testing in your area I've found extremely usful are www.modelmayhem.com | www.whoistesting.com

NETWORKING

The say is vintage and you've probably heard it many times, So yes in the fashion industry at times it is who you know not. Take time to rub shoulders with several others regardless if they are a photographer, models, designer whatever..There may come a time when you need them so it's always good to have that relationship there beforehand. When your portfolio has reached a standard to where it's acceptable to move forward with testing with model agencies this is a time to pick up the phone, get poking around and building even more relationships with the agency's bookers to test with their new face models; or if your your super lucky mainboard faces. (again even better for your portfolio).

One common networking method that allot of people use is practically treating their team (makeup artists, hair stylits, stylists etc) like their second family so no matter what time of the day (well not like 2am but maybe) your awesome team can always come together and make beautiful images and generally have a great time as you do..which will always lead to great imagery for everyone.

More to continue..

To end all DD Drama's.

Journal Entry: Sat May 7, 2011, 11:50 AM

I don't like the way some individuals personally go out of their way to put the deviants down that have been given DDs. I mean come on they have joined a website to share their work with the world and so what if I decided they deserve the attention they so rightly deserve.

Deviants need to put themselves in others shoes, they wouldn't like it if possibly their happiest moment being apart of deviantART was ruined by some cyber-bullies with nothing else to do with their time than be negative. If you have a problem with why a deviation was chosen for a DD send a friendly note to the gallery moderator that gave it, not verbally ruin somebody else's day.

Ever wondered how that deviant you admire got to where they are and jumped the walls your still looking at? Get to know has been created to get that need-to-know information out of that inspiring deviant you've always admired. From the first steps, to challenges they have overcome, what the future holds and friendly advice along the way.

Today I shall be interviewing the amazingly talented FurtiveLungs

deviantID3 by FurtiveLungs

Can you tell us about yourself and how you ended up in the fashion industry?

Well, my name is Anni, i'm 20 and i'm from Estonia. When i was younger i wanted to become a fashion designer or a stylist so i've always been into clothes, accessories, hair and make-up. But about 4-5 years ago i started to get into photography. The more i learned about different styles i discovered that fashion photography is something that fits me the most - that i can easily express my creativness. I'm technically not in the industry. Yet. But i aspire to be. I know i have a long road ahead of me to really become a professional but i think my enthusiasm and absolute love for fashion and style will get me there.

What was one of the biggest challenges you had to overcome when starting out?

I'm actually a very shy person so it was, and sometimes still is, hard to motivate myself to approach people – model agencies, models, stylists, make-up artists and booking studios or finding locations for shoots. I've had a lot turndowns because i'm still starting out and i don't have as much experience as some of these people are looking for so to spare myself, i tried to do a lot the things myself. But as the time went by i realized it's very hard to get things done all by yourself and outside help is nessescary. And of course the mind block that all the artists get, i think – am i good enough? My ideas, haven't they already been done? It was hard to motivate myself into believing that i am good enough, that i do have new things to offer for this world.

What would you like to see more of in the fashion world, and why?

Fashion should be mixed with personal style. I'd like to see more crazy things happening. Things that on the first glance really don't go well together but somehow make it work, make it unique. I guess it's really extraordinary what i'd like to see... seems like a lot of the things have already been done. That's why i get the feeling like fashion overall should go back to basics, rip down the imperious mask it has formed within time and get the „less is more" thing going on since over the top isn't all that crazy anymore but more exhausting. Haha, it seems like i'm contradicting myself but i swear it makes all perfect sense in my head.

Diamonds are my best friends by FurtiveLungs My emotional breakdown by FurtiveLungs Sleep Is For The Weak by FurtiveLungs

Would you believe where you are now is the final accomplishment or are your eyes set on a bigger goals?

I'd like to believe that bigger things and oportunites are yet to come. I'm still young and just getting my name out there.

Do you find social networking a big plus in the industry, if so why?

It's very time consuming to have accounts in many different sites, especially when you want to get back to everyone. Sometimes i get so many messages it is pretty much impossible to give everyone a decent reply so i usually try to get back to those who have asked somekind of a question. And art thieves are something that i'm constanly in wars with and not just the people who use pictures for fake accounts but big companies printing my works on t-shirts, bags, book and CD covers etc. But in general, i think it definitely has more pros than cons. It's so much easier to get your name out there, meet new people and get new important contacts and of course, the most important, get feedback about your works.

What is your favourite photograph you've shot and the story behind it? (inspirations, desires etc)

There are many pieces that have a very personal meaning behind them, so i'm having a little hard time picking just one. But i guess „Sweet Lips but Bitter Eyes" is one my all time favorites. The meaning behind it is that even though things might seem okay on the surface, deep down it may not. The word pair „sweet lips" means that people don't always tell the truth, they tend to sugarcoat things but „bitter eyes" means that the eyes tell the truth no matter what. So whatever you say, the eyes reflect the truth therefore, it's not always the words, it's the actions and the bond, the feeling, the vibe that matters more.

Sweet lips but bitter eyes by FurtiveLungs Bitter Embrace by FurtiveLungs Little things give you away by FurtiveLungs

Who/What inspires you?

To but it in one word: everything. People around me, nature, music, lyrics, poetry, literature, movies, other artists.

For people starting out in the fashion industry, what would be the best advice you could give to them?

I'm not so sure i'd be the right person to answer it since i'm still starting out myself also. But one of the things that i tell myself is to never give up and do what i love nevertheless what others might say. I've learned that fashion industry is harsh and competitive and there are many people who are willing to step over you no matter what, are mean to you and generally just hope you fail but you can't never let that get to you. Growing a thick skin in this industry is very much nessescary but you shouldn't get intimidated by criticism, constructive if that is, not plain mean comments from people who don't even know what they're talking about – just brush them off and don't waste your tears and even worse, your precious time on them.

On average, how does your normal day go prior to setting up a shoot?

It very much depends on what kind of shoot it is. I like variety. I migh have this „less is more" theme when all i need is natural light, a model, location and camera and altogether with shooting it might take even less than an hour but the next shoot can be something very extravagant with timeconsuming make-up and hair and other preparations such as setting up the lights and so on.
But usually it's checking out the location and its surroundings when it's the place i don't know, picking out or discussing the outfit(s) with the stylist, setting up the lights and props if nessescary.

Obsidian by FurtiveLungs Lumivalge by FurtiveLungs I write sins not tragedies by FurtiveLungs

Did you find when starting up in the industry you had to earn a lot of trust from all creatives? (makeup artists, stylists, clients)

Actually i've never had any disagreements when it comes to make-up artists, stylist and clients. I do the make-up and hair 70% of the times myself and the stylist always get s what i'm trying to go for and as for clients, they always give me free hands to do anything.

What's the story/message behind your photography?

My one and only aim is to talk to people through my photography. I want people to somehow relate to what i do, i want the images to tocuh them in one way or another. If they can't relate i hope they at least find somekind of inspiration or feast for an eye out of them

Do you have a favourite shoot atmosphere, as in being in a studio or on location with your personal work?

I don't really like studios that much. I feel like i cannot use my whole creativness whilist using a backdrop and lights. It's like i can only do so much with the situation. Almost as if i'm flattened into a box. I like natural light and natural surroundings and props. I'd love to shoot outside more often but since Estonian weather is so unpredictable it's almost impossible to book a shoot in advance.

Be sure to check out FurtiveLungs's gallery for a complete collection of all her photography. If you have any future recommendations of people you'd like to be interviewed or any questions you would of liked to ask, please send me a note titled 'Get to know interviews'.
